Coat Blanket
Coat Blanket
My quarter horse already has her winter coat but it is supposed to get to atleast -35C should I blanket her?
My horse is a 16 year old quarter horse in a field by herself and she is my first horse. I have lots of horse sense but i am not to sure if she would get too hot. I think that -35 C will be too cold for her. I guesse my question should be would it be a good idea to put a winter blanket, an rain sheet or just leave her with her coat in the freezing cold Okanagan winter??
I also should have mentioned that she does not seem to like the hay we have gotten her. It is a grass hay but my friend and i board at the same place and she has alfalfa and she seems to like that so we have been putting one flake of alfalfa in with her 2-3 flakes of grass hay, but still when we get there in the morning not all her hay is gone, and she is not one to save her food!! Yes she does have shelter but not a stall there are three walls and unfortunately the wind blows into the shelter anyways.
Yes she has been unblanketed outside up untill now, but it has not been this cold out.
No, she'll be fine. Horses stay warm by trapping a layer of warm air next to their skin. A blanket pushes the hair down and gets rid of that layer of warm air, often making the horse colder. Horses were made to be outside, she will be fine. Just give her some extra hay to eat; digesting it will keep her warm and make sure she has shelter.
